Douglas Fir Plywood

A project with Matheson Whitely Architects and Ask Interiors to detail, build and install furniture and a staircase for a new studio space fit out. All pieces were made from Douglas Fir plywood in our workshop and assembled on site to high tolerances.

The stair incorporated an initial block of 3 winder treads tapering to a sharp point, which was met by the inside corner of a laminated handrail that also finished at a point as it met the terrazzo floor. On the treads of the stair we inlaid an anodised aluminium bar to improve wear, and provide visual contrast. The stair flight rises to a landing and turns 90 degrees upto the 1st floor to arrive opposite a 7m wide wall of storage joinery, which incorporates a sliding pocket door into a meeting room beyond.

The meeting table is 2.6m long and made from 2 layers of abutting ply sheets laminated to create a solid tabletop. The base is formed from 2no I shaped legs connected by a central beam.

The studio desks were also formed from laminated douglas ply sheets and are made to accommodate 2 workstations on either side of a central screen and service trough.
